Posted: Thu Nov 02, 2006 7:44 pm Post subject: I'm new to this - I haven't used e-collars, I'm just visiting different forums to learn about the different training methods, I haven't decided for sure on a method to use on my dog yet so I'm trying to get objective information.
I have felt an e-collar on my hand before. I agree that the lower settings did not feel like anything. But do you really use these low settings only?
I don't understand if the stimulation is not uncomfortable then why would the dog bother with anything when he feels it? If it's to get the dog's attention, can you use a vibrating or beeping collar instead, and if not then why?
Also, is it possible that if the dog is very excited while chasing something, could he be oblivious to the e-collar too? I know that when my dog is chasing something and I'm yelling at him to stop, he literally can't hear me, it's not that he hears me but chooses to not stop. Because sometimes I will shout and shout and he keeps on running, then suddenly I will shout the same as before and but now he suddenly jumps up into the air and turns around startled and then obeys me, as if he only just heard me! So is it possible for a dog to just not feel the e-collar too if he is very aroused like when chasing something?Back to top

I think the lower settings would be more for later on communicating - they call it a "tap on the shoulder" (good articles on the site here.)
